Exhibition Stand Shapes Explained: Straight vs L-Shape vs U-Shape vs Arch

Walk any trade show and you'll spot the mistake within minutes: a big U-shaped stand boxed into a booth that only opens on one side, half its branding aimed at a neighbour's bare wall. It happens because people choose a stand shape from photos they liked — when the shape they actually needed was locked in the moment they booked the space.

So don't start with the shape. Start with your floor plan and one question: how many sides of your booth open onto an aisle? Count that, and the shape almost picks itself.

Reading your floor plan

Look at your booth and count the sides facing an aisle (open) versus the sides backing onto neighbours or a shell-scheme wall (closed). That number points straight to the shape:

  • One open side (inline / shell scheme) → Straight back wall
  • Two open sides (corner booth) → L-shape
  • Three open sides (peninsula) → U-shape (or arch)
  • All four open (island) → U-shape or arch, seen from every direction

Everything below builds on that.

The four shapes

Straight back wall — the billboard

A single flat, LED-backlit wall spanning the width of your booth. It's the workhorse: a clean, glowing billboard behind your stand. Best when your booth is inline (open on one side only) or sits inside a shell scheme, and you want maximum message for minimum spend. Available 1m to 6m wide at 2.4m high.

Best for: inline booths, shell schemes, backdrops, budget-conscious stands. From: $999 (1m) up to $4,862 (6m), single-sided.

L-shape — the corner catcher

A back wall plus a return wall at a right angle, so your brand turns the corner and faces two aisles at once. The two wings lock together with hidden L-shape connectors so the SEG graphic wraps the corner cleanly — it reads as one continuous branded wall, not two panels bolted together. Ideal for a corner booth with two open sides.

Best for: corner booths, catching traffic from two directions, more branded surface than a flat wall. From: $4,450 (3m series) / $6,798 (6m series), single-sided.

U-shape — the immersive room

Three walls that wrap the back and both sides, creating a semi-enclosed, premium space visitors step into. It gives you the most branded surface, defines a clear "room" for demos or meetings, and blocks visual clutter from neighbours. Ideal for a peninsula or island booth with three or more open sides.

Best for: peninsula/island booths, premium presence, an enclosed demo or meeting space. From: $6,860 (6x1 series) / $6,885 (3m series), single-sided.

Sky Arch — the statement overhead

An arched configuration that carries branding up and over the stand in a curved overhead span. It's the tallest-impact option — visible from across a crowded hall long before someone reaches your aisle — and signals a flagship, serious-brand presence. Best for island/peninsula stands where you want to dominate sightlines and be found from a distance.

Best for: flagship island stands, maximum visibility across the hall, hero brand moments. From: $4,689 (3m series) / $8,787 (6m series), single-sided.

Side-by-side comparison

Shape Booth it suits Open sides it faces Feel From (single-sided)
Straight Inline / shell scheme 1 Clean billboard $999
L-shape Corner 2 Turns the corner $4,450
U-shape Peninsula / island 3 Enclosed, premium $6,860
Sky Arch Island / flagship 3–4 Statement overhead $4,689

(Prices are entry single-sided kits. Double-sided printing and an optional matching 1m × 1m backlit counter add to each — ask for a quote on your exact config.)

Match it to your booth

3×3 booth (3m frontage): The 3m Series covers all three shaped kits — L-shape for a corner, U-shape to enclose, or Sky Arch for overhead impact. A great first premium stand.

6×3 booth (6m frontage): The 6m Series scales it up — a 6m L-shape (6m back wall + 3m return) commands a corner, the 6x1 U-shape wraps a deeper space, and the 6x3 Sky Arch is the full flagship statement.

Inline / shell scheme (one open side): Skip the shaped kits — a straight backlit wall in the right width is all you need, and the budget goes further.

What every shape shares

Whichever shape you choose, the underlying system is identical — so you're only deciding on layout, not compromising on the stand:

  • Edge-lit LED backlighting with pre-installed 24V drivers — plug-and-play from a standard power point, no electrician.
  • Tool-free assembly — number-coded frames push-fit together; two people, no tools.
  • Seamless SEG fabric graphics, custom printed to your artwork with a proof before printing.
  • Blackout rear panels included on single-sided kits (white inner face to boost brightness, black outer to stop light bleed) — many competitors charge extra for this.
  • Premium wheeled transport cases for every panel.
  • Replaceable skins — rebrand for the next show by reordering just the fabric, keeping the frame and cases.
  • Optional matching backlit counter (1m × 1m).
  • 12-month hardware warranty, indoor use, custom sizes available for strict venue limits.

Note these are made to order — allow about 12 working days production plus freight, so order roughly 4 weeks before your show.

Frequently asked questions

What exhibition stand shape do I need? Count how many sides of your booth open onto an aisle. One open side suits a straight back wall; a corner (two open sides) suits an L-shape; a peninsula or island (three-plus open sides) suits a U-shape or an arch. Send us your floor plan if you're unsure and we'll match it.

What's the difference between an L-shape and a U-shape stand? An L-shape is a back wall plus one side return, turning a single corner to face two aisles. A U-shape adds a second return so it wraps three sides, enclosing the space for a more immersive, premium stand. The U-shape gives more branded surface; the L-shape suits a corner booth and costs less.

Is the corner join on an L-shape or U-shape seamless? Yes. The wings lock at a true right angle with hidden top-and-bottom connectors, and the SEG fabric wraps the corner so it reads as one continuous wall with no visible gap.

Can one frame be reconfigured into different shapes for different shows? The panels are modular and the printed skins are replaceable, so you can reuse the frame and cases and reprint fabric to suit a new size or layout. Tell us your upcoming venues and we'll advise the most flexible setup.

Do shaped stands need special power or an electrician? No. Every panel is pre-wired with 24V 200W drivers for AU/NZ power and runs plug-and-play from a standard outlet. A larger kit simply uses more drivers, all included.

Which shape is best for an island booth seen from all sides? A U-shape or a Sky Arch, printed double-sided. Both are designed to read well from multiple directions; the arch adds overhead visibility across the hall, while the U-shape creates an enclosed branded room.

Can I add a counter, and can you custom-size for my venue? Yes to both — an optional 1m × 1m backlit counter matches any kit, and we can manufacture slightly under standard (e.g. 5.85m instead of 6m) to meet strict venue size limits.

The bottom line

Don't start from the shape — start from your floor plan. One open side, go straight. A corner, go L-shape. A peninsula or island, go U-shape for an enclosed room or a Sky Arch to dominate sightlines. The stand system is the same premium backlit SEG build underneath, so you're free to pick purely on booth position and the impression you want to make.
